The greatest thing about this machine is the "certified steam machine" mode/settings all steam games now can be optimised for...

So this is a gigantic win for people with 8gigs of vram, as developers now has hardware they MUST optimize for - if they want to seriously sell their games on steam, having that approved stamp like the deck

It's like they're anti-Apple in that regard - hardware coming from a large, established, extremely rich company looking worse than random chink shit.

they don't really have that advantage here

It's minimal because it doesn't have default DE or programs. It's up to you what you want to install. It's not ultra minimal but still very much minimal.

>It's a low production device.
I guess if your comparison is an xbox/ps
Analysts predict they sold millions.
Hell, just a million would make it an extremely high production device, well over the threshold for cost savings from mass production.

I know 3 people alone at work who had a deck, no one knows that the fuck any of the other handhelds are.

Nah this shit hardware as-is will be $500 +/- $100 since anything more will piss off even their rabid fanboys. In ~2 years when Strix Halo is about to be EOL Valve will almost certainly release the Steam Machine Pro for $1000-ish since AMD will have leftover stock.

The gamers nexus video mentioned its a soldered on gpu. They asked the designers about it and they said they considered socketed parts at first but went with this for heating and size reasons.

Gentoo is as minimal as you make it. It's a meta-distribution. You can build in all the fit or trim it completely. You can even make a custom image with only Busybox, Musl libc and runtime dependencies for an app and nothing else (I make custom docker images this way).

The x86-to-ARM solution is an emulator and not a translation layer, they mentioned that in (I think?) The gamers nexus interview.
It's still very cool, but it won't be anywhere near as efficient as Proton
