Taken on his own merits Buchanan was not bad, when people say he was bad they just mean they hate his defense of states' rights. That would be like calling Polk a bad president because of his conquest of the southwest. Sure, you can disagree with it, but be honest and make it clear what you mean because "bad president" usually means incompetence.
