And you can immediately ask yourself; what kind of commander wouldnt want to capture the enemy and use them as leverage in a peace settlement, which would have actually shown good-will, rather than leaving the enemy to escape and then "claim" that you had the ability to capture them.

But like you said, the Germans renewed the assault on Dunkirk as soon as possible, and the captured the city just a day after the evacation was complete. The capture of Dunkirk also resulted in heavy German casualties, so if Hitler did not care about the evacuation, then he was really just an asshole to his own soldiers.

While your argument is true, it is only true during the time when Germany thought they still could win. It's quite puzzling that Germany never resorted to chemical/biological warfare in 1945 when the war was obviously lost, and Hitler held on to the belief of any new miracle weapon could win a battle, and in 1945 Hitler was quite apathetic towards even Gerrman losses.

This is a stark contrast to the British, whom in anticipation of a potential German victory against the RAF, began Operation Vegetarian, a biological weapon program to drop anthrax on Germany and kill millions, in case Britain was ever pushed into a losing situation.

The real issue with Dunkirk is that it sits in low marshy lands. Rundstedt wanted to attack the pocket but the other generals and the entire staff was against the idea, so they slipped around it knowing that the British were too feeble to launch a counter. As for not invading Britain, Germans knew they weren't going to commit to it in 1940 because they weren't even planning on beating France that early, but the situation developed as such that they wanted to measure and pace themselves against the real perceived threat- the Soviets. Had they gone in reverse, Britain could have fallen but the Soviets would have been much better prepared and possibly on an offensive stance.

They never claimed this, they claim the opposite universally, and there's no reason to believe this. They didn't even want to go into WW2. It was Poland that bombed their railways and radio stations, it was supposed to be a limited war against them but Britain and France declared war on Germany as a pro-active measure. Germany was forced to react. They weren't even prepared to fight against France. Lookup their production rates in 1938- everything from AA to armor production to aircraft production slacks off. That's why Britain and France declared war and why the US sent a list of a few dozen countries and territories that the Germans aren't even supposed to look at. They knew Germany wasn't materially preparing and that was their problem.

They didn't push further as they advanced because the forward panzer elements were getting separated from the main Heer forces. They were overstretching and running out of supplies and had been going without rest for a number of days and needed to rest. It was a sound decision to halt them to prevent being overrun/ encircle and letting the Luftwaffe bomb troops and ships which they were relatively effective in doing.
