It has been centuries of exclusion, false promises, and mistreatment. I’m guessing they get that 9000 mile figure from the length of railroads the CSA had in 1861. While much of Dixie was an agrarian shithole, they had the third longest railroad mileage in the world, after Yankeedom and the U.K., and slave labor played a huge role in building and maintaining it. I’m surprised some grifters haven’t gone after CSX or Norfolk Southern but it’s not 2020 any more.

The 9000 miles must refer to the railroads in the south in 1861. After the war there were a lot of lines built partly by black convict labor, like the C & O, that gave rise to the John Henry legend. It sucked for everybody slinging a pick and shovel as railroads chewed up the bodies of whatever cheap labor was available, and in the south that happened to be blacks. Good luck trying to get anything out of the mega corporations that own those railroads now.
