Mexico tried to reassert control. In 1830 they banned further American immigration, they did in fact crack down on slavery, and centralized power under President Santa Anna
This lead to Texas declaring independence in 1836, forming the Republic of Texas after defeating Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto. Texas was annexed into the United States in 1845, leading directly to the Mexican-American War (1846โ1848).
So yes, Mexico cracking down on slavery and Texas entering the United States as a slave state was part of the calculus, but is a far from complete story
