>Spain
They completely wasted their potential.
>best climate in Europe
>best geopolitical location in Europe
>discovered and entire new continent
Didn't use literally any of it for their advantage.

They had everything to become a legit European first-league power, but an incopetent and shortsighted elites, who understood jack shit about economics led them into useless European wars, chronic price-inflation and a lack of industrialization.

Perhaps if they had never been conquered by the Arabs/Moors, they would organically educate actual political elites who knew a bit of governing a country into prosperity.

Now, part 2:
>Spanish Empire
It had the chances of being as successful as the US.

What had to be done was an implementation of an actual racial policy. No intermarriage with the Amerindians (who should be isolated, either in camps, or sent to Africa for good).

Also, no fucking African slavery.

Then it should work itself out. Unless they go the socialist route - then it can't be helped.

As a trivia - here you have a list of who brought the most African slaves into the Americans - might be surprising to most people.

You squandered a lot of good things you had going for yourself.
You created some of the most savage nations of drones.
And for some reason, you place your nations impact, history, and culture to the same plane as Italy or Greece. When people challenge it, you resort to race baiting and DNA tests about muh we wuz Romans (shit that no one cares about).
I don't like you.

I have been relearning Spanish after leaving high-school mostly fluent so I have an easier time learning other romance languages. That might be a meme but I want to start speaking more languages anyway and so its easiest to start with one I already know a fair bit of. Spain itself feels empty in a strange way. I could tell when I went to visit Barcelona and Madrid and various other historical landmarks that at one point this was a nerve center for European culture, but now its just kind of dead feeling. It's like they got out paced by the English and French a few hundred years ago and just never recovered. Which is literally what happened, but I guess I just never felt so acutely the consequences of history in a modern society.

Greatest end of history nation in Europe.

>incredible and inspiring origins of squabbling brothers eventually producing great kingdoms which conquered a much larger adversary
>unification of kingdoms and founding of spain seen as a watershed moment in not only european history, but world history
>impressive military history, beautiful cultural history, fascinating political history
>major player in the discovery and exploration of the new world
>an entire continent bent to its will
>numerous ancient civilisations shattered by their troops (or diseases, kek)
>endless tales of heroism, adventure, discovery
>seen as a behemoth of power and opulence
>defined the first couple of centuries of the early modern period
>started to stumble as modernity arrived
>a slow acting rot set in
>what was once groundbreaking and opulent is now dated, cumbersome
>failed to adapt as other nations roared ahead
>first serious tangle with new modern nations ends in a humiliating defeat and extremely rapid collapse of almost everything
>groans from decade to decade
>torn about from the inside, splintering on the outside
>clumsily lands in contemporary times with its victorious past all but a memory, only kept alive by the thin veil of monarchy

Honorary Third World country until Francisco Franco came along and dragged it into the 20th Century. Seriously, literacy Spain in 1860 was ~20% (only marginally better than Italy) when it was already near-universal in the United States, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.

>Spanish Empire

Set the standard for retarded theocratic despotism from the 15th Century until the Wars of Spanish Succession and the Dutch Revolt knocked it down a peg. Napoleon's rampage across Iberia was pretty much the deathblow, with the 1898 war with the United States being the final nail in its coffin.

It was an empire dominated by Genoese capital, justified by the pope, expanded by Castilian power, unified by Aragonese realpolitik, and politically led by Austrians.
ThatΒ΄s why it sucked after Habsbourgs left. The Bourbons lacked papal approval, Genoese money, or Aragonese political culture.

Venetians and Florentines imitated the Gonese with France and England. The Medici empire in France failed in global power terms. And the Venetian one in England quite surprassed the Spanish.

Pre-modern European history was shaped by a handful of "noble" families - they spoken with different languages but talking of them as of "Spain", "Italy" or whatever is misrepresenting it. Spaniards or Italians in general had fuck all to do with it.
Spanish "nobles" were roughly just as retarded and genocidal as any other "nobles". Psychopathy comes with the title.

Britain failed taking over India
