It wasn't justified though. Polk was basically an imperialist who knew that if he sent troops into disputed territory along the Texas-Mexico border, he would likely be starting a war. In fact, I’d argue he hoped it would happen. To Mexico, it was an invasion. It was completely reasonable for Mexico to attack American troops, which they did. Polk couldn’t have designed it any better. He went to Congress urging them to declare war on Mexico, claiming that they “shed American blood upon American soil.” Congress, of course, went along with it. But it’s long past due that we all admit that the Mexican-American war was a war of American aggression just seeking to expand their borders.
