>The 1960 election is commonly stated as the point where America overcame its longstanding anti-Catholic prejudice. This is not entirely true however; breakdowns of voter demographics show that the two parties remained largely divided on traditional ethnic and religious lines--Kennedy carried 83% of the Catholic vote, 83% of the Jewish vote, over 70% of the African-American vote while Nixon's voter base was predominantly white and Protestant. About 33% of Protestants voted for Kennedy which appears to have ultimately decided the election.[2]
