I think I've figured out the reason for his infamous refusal to give a straight answer when asked if he believes that Christ was the Son of God or in the resurrection.
It's about lying. He is obsessed with telling the truth under any circumstances. This has come up in his past public statements, and it came up again in that recent 20 Atheists vs. a Christian, er, Jordan Peterson video on YouTube. He is a Kantian on the subject. To lie is gravely immoral. And the principle is fundamental in Judaism and Christianity--it's one of the Ten Commandments.
So by his own code, he can't lie. But he is a modern, rational, educated man. He just can't bring himself to believe it more likely than not that a man was the Son of God and rose from the dead. So if he's asked if he believes it, he can't simply say he does, because that would be lying. But he also doesn't want to weaken the power of what he thinks is a beautiful faith tradition by admitting it's probably not literally true, even though there is a lot of wisdom and beauty in it.
So he's in a bind. The best he can do is equivocate and obfuscate. Refuse to give a straight answer.
