During a gas attack in WWI his original mustache prevented his mask from sealing and he nearly died. So he cut it and kept it that way.

all the victorians had to cut their giant bushy mustaches to fit under gas masks. its like a metaphor for the transition between 19th and 20th centuries.

Marketing, branding. He saw that a distinctive look worked for Lenin so he did something similar. Running for office is a lot like selling a product.

He got the idea from Gottfried Feder, his mentor for a time, very early on just post-World War I. It can be assumed that Hitler wore it as early as 1919 due to Feder's influence. Contrarily, Hitler's moustache before that, during World War I, was a little wider, even the trimmed up second style he wore.

Well, many people predated Hitler’s stache. It was popular at the time at remained popular in some parts of the world after him. In some areas it’s just considered funny or completely uninteresting whereas in other regions people will think you’re a Nazi

It was either what I wrote, or that he had his more iconic, shorter toothbrush moustache sometime after sporting this already fairly short one, towards the very end of World War I. For him to have had it towards the tail end of the Great War is not impossible, but he did have a slightly longer moustache before it, and before that one, an even longer and pointed moustache during the earlier times of the war.

A gas mask won’t seal if there’s hair in the way. Him and a bunch of other soldiers trimmed their mustaches
