How can a country be ruled for almost 1000 years by Arabs, speak Arabic, be Muslim, have some of the oldest mosques and be on of the earliest Muslim nations, yet claim to be European?

How were they exterminated when there are still millions of christians all over the levant and in Egypt? The Maghreb is a more complex case, but even the dynasties that were known as particularly oppressive like the Almohads simply did what christians had been doing since the start.
