To be anyone of importance in the community *at all* in the middle ages, you had to subscribe to the same faith as the elites in that region.

I'm convinced all but the 5% dumbest human beings knew it was fraudulent, but they depended on Christendom for the social order.

It kept people following the rules, it kept women loyal and justified subjugating them, it kept slaves/serfs docile. it kept people loyal to the noble class, It justified war when the elites wanted to boost their power, prestige, and land.

I'm convinced the elite Romans knew this and deliberately promoted Christianity for those reasons.

Christianity had a lot to offer poor peasantry/slaves, when the former pagan religions pretty much offered them nothing.
