This "cycle" may have only just appeared for the first time and it may be a very inaccurate model of what's actually happening. But in order to prevent something like this cycle from occurring, I think the common people will need to find a better rallying point against the woke nonsense than religion.

Public Atheism and irreligiosity are not new phenomena, hyper rational world views and a rejection of metaphysics have even been on the decline for about the last century and a half but it has not been replaced by religious fervor or renewal. The late 18th century was probably the peak of empirical thought and while that lead to certain states in certain regions liberalizing that was a separate trend informed by a multitude of other factors, also hardly equitable to "woke". These things are quite complex and drawing it down into simple cause and effect is silly, doubly so because you assume that Atheism inevitably beats even lowly superstition.
