The US was fearful the Germans would develop a nuke first and use it and why having the bomb was needed. Japan unfortunately outlasted the Germans. However, had the Soviets not been hot to take Japan I'm not so sure the US would have ended the war that way. For the Soviets losing a million or two million or three million more men to take Japan is not a deterrent.
