Like I'm all for believing that religion doesn't make sense, why would God be so petty on the bible over such minor details on the lives of early humans, why would he prohibit people from eating pork or seafood etc, but at the same time if it isn't real then all those powerful people whose money and influence exceed anyone else's are doing something incredibly nonsensical then.

Every person has to live in some form of waking dream. This isn't optional. But what a person can do is make choices about those dreams or even try to force certain dreams onto others.

So religion is real because it has real effects on a broad scale and can even make promises about those effects which later come true. And yes, billionaires are perfectly happy to dabble in religious games because they've seen themselves how large amounts of financial and spiritual capital can change in flow.
