This happened after centuries of Poles polonising the Ukrainians, destroying Eastern Orthodox churches and brutal slavery level feudal exploittation of Ukrainian peasants. And also Stepan had noting to do with this.
This is atrocity propaganda by the poles to weaken western Ukrainian claims to lviv despite western Ukrainians being the least likely to murder civilians compared to eastern Ukrainians. Poles would later invent the Holocaust

the discovery of thousands of bodies in three Lviv prisons of victims of the Soviet NKVD prisoner massacres, which were widely blamed on "Jewish Bolsheviks". The pogroms have been widely debated in the historiography, including the extent to which Ukrainian nationalists played a central or complicit role.

Poles helped kill Jews in lviv after the discovery of the murdered prisoners, specifically the ones seen as Soviet collaborators. Seems lviv was pretty chaotic despite only a few Jews actually getting murdered
>>17829995 >Jews were press-ganged by the Germans to remove bodies of NKVD's victims from the prisons and to perform other tasks, such as clearing bomb damage and cleaning buildings >the German military reported that the Lviv population was taking out its anger about the prison murders "on the Jews ... who had always collaborated with the Bolsheviks >Former Soviet policemen wore their blue Soviet uniforms, but with a Ukrainian trident instead of a red star on their hats.[19] Flyers distributed by OUN in the first days of the German invasion instructed the population: "Don't throw away your weapons yet. Take them up. Destroy the enemy. ... Moscow, the Hungarians, the Jewsโthese are your enemies. Destroy them.
>>17830002 >Soviet security officers murdered between 3,500 and 7,000 people in Lviv's prisons >the victims were Ukrainians, Poles, and Jews, including some women and minors >NKVD planned an evacuation of 23,000 prisoners from western Ukraine >Only 800 were evacuated, most dying from typhus >12,000 polish POW forced laborers were also evacuated, about 20% dying >As a result of being unable to evacuate the prisoners the NKVD ordered the murder of the 23,000+ prisoners in western Ukraine >Officials and guards fled the city, leaving prisoners locked in the prisons >on June 25, when mass and systematic liquidation of inmates began in all Lviv prisons. Bogdan Musiaล and Alexander Guryanov [pl] linked the commencement of the extermination action to the arrival in the city of the deputies of the People's Commissars for Internal Affairs and State Security of the Ukrainian SSR
>>17830024 >Massacres in Lviv's prisons usually followed a similar pattern. NKVD and NKGB officers called prisoners from their cells, then individually or in small groups led them to the prison basements and killed them there. Individual and mass executions also took place in the prison yards. In the final hours before the German troops entered the city, NKVD officers killed prisoners directly in their cells, opening fire through the bars or throwing grenades into the overcrowded rooms. The bodies were buried in graves dug on the prison grounds or left in cells and basements (some of which were bricked up). >Executions were carried out with car engines running to drown out the sounds of gunfire and the screams of the murdered >Most political prisoners, however, faced death. Cybulski reported that victims were called out from their cells in groups of 20โ40 and then shot in the prison yard >in its final phase, the building was set on fire. The NKVD likely started the fire to cover up the evidence of their crimes >over 2,000 people, were killed by NKVD officers.[44] The piles of corpses found in the basements of Brygidki were stacked from 4 to 5 layers deep >bodies bore signs of torture >bodies had skulls crushed with axes or blunt objects, skin peeled from hands, fingers and genitals cut off, and signs of being burned alive >female bodies with breasts cut off and signs of rape >executions were carried out very hastily, using grenades and machine guns >only part of the bodies from Lviv's prisons were exhumed and ceremoniously buried
