People survived just fine in 1945-1990 East Germany.
In fact many Germans today feel that times were better then.

It was all just NSDAP propaganda because Hitler wanted everyone to go down with the ship. His ideology dictated that the world wasnt worth living in without national socialism so its better that everyone else perish too.

I think most of those kids would have chosen life over death and preferred to live in DDR, if they had known.

Not in the modern age, especially after the Napoleonic wars, and even then children were used in supportive roles and not frontline soldiers.
In the 20th century virtually every western nation had set the age of conscription at 18, tho they turned a blind eye during both world wars when people lied about their age and insisted on fighting.

But the Hitler youth was something else. Not even the Russians resorted to it when they were at a critical stage of a fight (Moscow, Stalingrad, Leningrad etc).

Birthrates collapses as living standards improve. China is currently on the brink of facing the same problem as the west because they went from a third world country in the 90s to being a economic superpower in the 2020s.
Some countries like Turkey have a clear split in birthrates dividing the entire country. The western half of turkey is developed and has near European level of living standards and consequently much lower birthrates. Eastern turkey is still primitive, has a iraq-tier society, and very high birthrates. This is a national crisis because the west is almost exclusively turks while the east is almost exclusively kurds.
Russia has the same problem with her poorer Caucasus regions. The Muslim Dagestan has a disproportionately higher birthrates than more developed central and western Russia, which means Dagestan immigrants moves to Moscow and Saint Petersburg to fill the void, causing a demographic shift.
