The Hindu texts mention absolutely horrific shit happening later in the Kali yuga (degenerate age of Kali the demon, or something) and say after the four hundred thirty four thousand years are over kalki will triumph over all the intense evil and re-establish the golden age from which then follows the other three ages and again and so forth. How believable is this? Does it hold merit, or is it just schizo babble?

Classical antiquity was superior to the Middle Ages, maybe even the bronze age was superior to antiquity. Bronze is a better metal than iron, and at some point we were taller than later (until recently). Maybe if we keep digging we'll find proof of a historical silver age and golden age.
Also the yugas are divided in subperiods, and one such period ended in 2012 or 2013, at the same time the Maya calendar has one of its cycles end.
Jains also have a cyclical view of the universe but IIRC in such cycles human get kilometers bigger than normal, which has very little merit.

Who is Maitreya Buddha? Maitreya is the next Buddha to arrive when the Buddha Dharma is completely eradicated and the world descends and suffers from ignorance. It's a similar concept.
