In reality they have been lagging behind economically for decades. Meanwhile the avarage person still just lives in a regular small town house or tiny city apartment not unlike those in the West and has access to pretty much the same technology.

If you want to see a real Asian success story, look at Singapore (which is also largely built on cheap labor of SEA workers, but many the Chinese-Singaporians do live in luxury).

lol "devastated", the atomic bombs did less damage than the fire bombing campaign of Tokyo. They literally rebuilt Nagasaki and Hiroshima in like 3 years. The atom bomb did most of the work knocking down the unusable buildings at the epicenter so they just had to clear the land and rebuild. The Japanese have always been good at rapid construction because they live on an island chain with frequent earthquakes.

Here's the reality:
Japan is being flooded by Jeets of various kinds (India, Nepal mostly) as we speak.

Japan has one of the lowest productivities per hour amongst the OECD They have living standards a tad below the French while working FAR longer for it.

The countryside dying out means everyone flocks to a few big cities where people live in very cramped apartments and endure long commutes.

Old age poverty is far higher than OECD average, as they lack the young to support higher payouts.

Japan is has Greece-tier government debt (250% per capita), which looks increasingly hopeless and therefore makes the Yen drop in value. Japan imports lots of stuff like fruit, vegetables, properly sized cars, building materials, which became very expensive for locals.

And Japans downfall started exactly when their demographics went down the shitter, you may argue there's a correlation.

To be fair, a lot of things about Japan are great, to this day, but they never "recovered" or "surpassed" anyone. They peaked 1990, when they were at the top of the world, and went downhill since then.

Also, Japan of all places increasingly opening up for immigrants is a sign of their absolute desperation. They hate foreigners, especially brown-skinned ones with a passion, they still do, but government & corporate overlords force the Japanese to swallow their pride, as they're endangered by civilisation collapse otherwise.
