The reason there was a lack of officers was that the army was massively expanded and people who were competent commanders from the civil war were too few, old or stopped keeping up with military developments
Most people who were purged were legitimate retards like Tukhachevsky
Competent and loyal military commanders that were purged by mistake were un-purged later like Rokossovsky

Personally, I think it is because he was rewarded for being a "based retard chud" type during the civil war. He had some success because the whites and liberal forces were disorganized and weak so any commander that could attack with energy was going to look like a super-star. When he had to go up against real opponents or take part in exercises his failings became more obvious. Charging in without building up supplies or awaiting reinforcements could work in the civil war but at no other time.

I assume you are talking about the purge that occurred in the late 1930s, which resulted in the execution of some of Stalin's greatest generals, such as Egorov, and the "Red Napoleon." However, most of the military figures you are referring to were merely expelled from the Soviet military, not exterminated. Many of these evicted officers were given the chance to rejoin the military.

If Tukhachevsky wasn't executed, no one would remember or credit him with anything today, he's literally only brought up to make an argument about Stalin being evil or whatever, just like how Trotsky is only remembered because he was popularised in the west. It's done to absurd degree, i often see him being credited with entirely of soviet military doctrine and winning ww2
