I imagine one of the reasons was because investigative and law enforcement techniques were so nonexistent that they needed some kind of deterrent to prevent crime and torture/public executions was one of those deterrents. People knew that while they were unlikely to be caught committing a crime, on the offchance that they did, they would REALLY regret it

A torture method that I think is particularly gruesome was the Chinese water torture method. You might have seen it on TV, where escapologists would be bound inside a glass cabinet filled with water, and miraculously escape.

In China, it was considered an honor to have your COCK AND BALLS removed so that you could become a well-dressed and well-fed slave. Empathy is a high-IQ trait. I’d would argue you probably need an IQ above 110 to feel it at all. Most of the world even today is not that high. Back then, with poor nutrition and such, even very few white people were that high.

Like what? Torture was heavily regulated and torturers/hangmen had specialized training so they would and could apply torture, always supervised, according to the local law in order to minimize the risk of long term effects or death. This is true for all societies that practiced torture.
It was gruesome because it was supposed to coerce a confession or testimony that could then be used in court. On the other hand it wasnt used lightly and reserved for serious offenses.

Weak rule of law, mostly. The lower the conviction rate for crimes, the harsher penalties have to be in order to have a deterrent effect. In the middle ages, you were virtually guaranteed to get away with a crime unless you were literally caught in the act, so when the authorities did manage to catch someone, they sought to make an example of them via torture and public execution.

That would be frightening if that's the case, right now it's believed a huge proportion of them are in or have been in jail. Most of the jailed psychopaths do not have high IQs. But I looked at psychopath subreddits (yeah that's right, I'm going to space this post too probably) and the bulk of them, 20% of whom I'm assuming are diagnosed, seem to be sharp/cunning and contemptuous of tomfoolery and people they deem stupid.

Know a guy exactly like that. High IQ + contempt for humanity can at least mirror psychopathy. High IQ + (ASD - etiquette/composure difficulties) looks exactly like what most people mean when they use the term as far as I can tell.

The guy I have in mind also has repeatedly confided in me that he's never felt love, despite really going out of his way to mimic it with women in his life.
