Why do Americans think they won the space race?

Ignore OP's post.

Do you guys think space tourism will be a thing in our lifetimes? Would you go to the moon if you had the chance?

The space race was primarily a propaganda war. A human actually walking on a world beyond Earth and then planting a flag on it is a far more psychologically powerful image than sending a dog to die in outer space.

It's already a thing. Katy Perry and some other rich women went to space for fun earlier this year.

I'm not talking about an airplane going into the upper atmosphere to simulate zero gravity for 11 mi9nutes. I mean a real trip to the moon

>Do you guys think space tourism will be a thing in our lifetimes?
No. It's all low earth orbit shit.
>Would you go to the moon if you had the chance?
Obviously. But we will likely never have any more manned missions on the moon. At the rate robotics are advancing, we will likely just send self operating vehicles and equipment to search for rare elements or alternate power sources.

I don’t even think you need to say that the moon is better propaganda, though I agree it is.
There wasn’t an agreed upon definition of race, it was just a bunch of stuff the countries did to say “we’re so smart and powerful” the implication for nuclear delivery devices was half the goal.
According to some Eisenhower biography I read 10 years ago, the USA never even lagged in icbm tech, when Sputnik went up though everyone shat themselves.

Still the race has an outsized effect on culture so I would say no one won the race, because it’s fake, but there’s no Soviet Union anymore so why not just say US?
Or you can say Soviets if you want to be assblasted about it
Anonymous No.17894949
well I can understand it from a technological standpoint. The space race was actually just an experiment to see who could launch the largest payloads into orbit to show off how much destructive firepower the soviets had. The US decided to go above an beyond the pissing match and thus won a pyrrhic victory

Russia won it (first to orbit the Earth, first object to the moon, first object to another planet) but then USA said that ONLY A MAN PLANTING A FLAG COUNTS and then declared themselves the winner for all time. After that, the russians stopped competing, because no-one likes playing against a cheater.

Exactly. Before the first landing it was discussed wether a United Nations flag should be planted to represent all of humanity - it was eventually overruled by the politicians who wanted to do a bit of selfish dick waving and boost their chances at the next election.

By the way, the scientific kits carried by Niel and co were made in the UK. One of which had a Union Jack carved by the technician who packed it on the inside. So you could say the American and the British flags were planted on the first landing. :)

Putting your flag on the moon >>>>>>>>>>>>>> literally anything else space related.
Why? Because it's fuckin' badass. It appeals to chauvinistic part of our monkey brains.
this should need explaining to a commie.
Literally all Nazi apologetics are BTFO by this photo.
Similarly, all space achievements made by the USSR are puny compared to the fact that the pole which was struck into the moon's surface carried the stars and stripes and not the hammer and sickle.

Because the USSR stopped being a going concern in 1991.

Cause the Russians only cared about doing it for show, Americans cared about doing it properly. Most of Russia's launched craft crashed back to earth after a few days, or weeks.Meanwhile America still has a satellite in orbit that was launched 1958. As a result of this Russia's space launch technology plateaued after the last of the captured German scientists died off and they had basically no satellite networks in orbit to show for it, meanwhile Americans actually did the hard work and so had dozens and soon hundreds of satellites in orbit which the Russians could do very little about.

Even to this day Russia basically sees Earth Orbit as ceded territory to the United States that they must fight defensively around because their space program was never focused on actually building long-lasting results.

For a few hours before crashing earthward again. Soviet space program has more failures and short-term orbits than anything else.

You don't understand the amount of risks involved because you think watching sci-fi is a substitute to studying engineering.
