White people only moved to temperate areas conducive to their way of life. Even when you're looking at convicts sent to Australia and New Zealand who were not seeking a higher standard of living, they weren't becoming hunter gatherers like the Aborigines and Maori, they had to grow wheat or raise sheep or some other activity Europeans are accustomed to, make a profit and pay taxes to the governor sponsoring their voyage. These settlers were then connected to Britain and its burgeoning industrial revolution.

Compare this to tropical Malthusian India with a population hostile to British rule or under the rule of a stagnant princely state.
