Russian identity from the get go was a mixture of Eastern and Western influences that both increased through conquest and alliances. only a thin veneer from 1700-1917. Peter the Great wished to europeanize Russia but was only able to put on the external facade of a european empire. The bolshevik revolution just took russia right back to its asiatic foundations which is authoritarian patrimonialism where tsar/general secretary/president owns everything and gives prizes to his lackeys in form of property, companies, etc in return for helping him govern the country; the opposite of western europe where the nobility, monarchy, and bourgeoisie all clashed for influence. Russia has more in common with asiatic steppe empires than european states.
