What do you guys think of Hell as a concept? I've heard people talk about it as separation from God, and then there's the idea that it's a firey torture pit. If God is all loving and all good, why would he subject people to such a horrible existence?

This is one of my main problems with Christian faith.

Some Christians believe that death is just "soul sleep", and that when Christ returns they will awaken to be judged.

I think the Christian idea of Hell, at least the way it is popularly interpreted, is a bit flawed. I have a few reasons for this, but mostly because the idea of infinite punishment for finite transgressions doesn't make much sense. Also, AFAIK the idea that Hell is eternal comes from only a few passages in the Bible that could be interpreted very differently.

However, you're asking about the *concept* of Hell, and I think the new atheist dogma that the concept of Hell only serves to scare people straight is utter garbage. Hell exists because we want it to. Think of all the terror committed in the world, all the people who do unspeakably terrible things and get clean away with them. I for one want to believe in divine retribution, the idea that God sets everything right in the end is comforting.

Everyone has got hell wrong. It does not involve burning in lava. It is instead a place of eternal and relentless tickling. Why else would that sensation exist? It has no purpose except to cause intense suffering without damaging the body. It was made for afterlife torture

There are two, maybe three concepts of Hell that I think are possible. There is the soundly orthodox Conscious Eternal Torment version of the Lake of Fire, there is also the less orthodox view of Annihilationism, which includes a punishment of suffering and subsequently inexistence after a certain point, and then there is a more Purgatory-like perspective, whereby people do suffer punishments, yet are eventually purged enough of evil to become fit to enter Heaven, which is considered to be a more liberal point of view, and may be dismissed as Universalism by most orthodox Christians. Personally, I think either options one or two are reasonably within the pale of orthodoxy and orthopraxy, but I lean towards the first one, the traditional Infernalism perspective. A sort of Purgatory Lake of Fire is too out of bounds for me. I just do not get that impression from reading the Bible, and apparently, most Christians do not, either. Ultimately, it is up to God which option he intends to carry out. I think that most likely, the Lord will stick to option one, or maybe option two, but option three is not impossible with God, if he wishes to institute that, instead. It is best to be on the safe and orthodox side, though.

I guess you can go to heaven or hell by all kinds of means but you never know what the next Christian leader will say about it. Trying to focus too much on either place probably will screw you up so focus instead on practical matters that work for you.
