Northern Europeans are on average taller because they have the most genetic connection to a particular group of nomaic steppe peoples that includes the well known Cro-Magnons. It is worth mentioning however that while Northern European populations are the tallest on average, there exists certain populations (such as the Dinka in South Sudan) which exhibit extrordinary height through different means, although these Nilotic groups are far fewer and further inbetween on a regional level.

It's partly this. Within living memory, the Chinese were very tiny people but now most of the Chinese I meet are fucking huge.
Can't say the same about Indian subcontinent people, Latinos, or Arabs. Yemen in particular is characterised by extreme shortness partly because of nutrition issues and partly because of massive inbreeding.

I imagine it's vaguely related to Bergmann's Rule, that populations from colder climates tend towards larger body sizes they retain heat more easily, while the opposite is true for smaller bodies. A mountain lion or a white-tail deer in Canada is pretty much always enormous compared to the same species in Florida.

Not true, I’m above average height in the west and have many global south co-ethnics that are as tall or taller than me. Most of them are also taller than their parents who weren’t brought up in the west.

The dutch used to be among the shortest people in Europe, though. Also a lot of second gen immigrant children get raised in very shitty and lean conditions, they don't get the nutrition a middle Class American may.
