To be fair the move for self-reported and self-identified "American" ancestry really took off with the 2010 census. I know some conservatives touted that as a strategy to "own the libs" citing a supposed policy about federal government funding being decided based on ancestry and implicit racial background. Ironically the parent of mine that was foolish enough to buy into that and follow through was more old stock American than they realized.

Even my ancestry which has lived in the same county in Vermont since the early 18th century is a vague mix of English, Dutch, and a handful of Germans and Scotch-Irish.
