On this day 80 years ago, the US committed the war crime of dropping an atomic bomb on civilians in Hiroshima. Three days later, another bomb would be dropped on Nagasaki.
Japan accepted the Potsdam Declaration on August 15th, ending the war.

80 years later Japan still bows down to the US when it no longer needs to. But it looks like US decline is catching up fast to the political class. Hopefully by the end of the decade Japan realizes there are better partners out there.

>The atomic bombing of Nagasaki had a devastating impact on the city's Christian population, which was concentrated in the Urakami district. Approximately 10,000 Christians, out of a community of 15,000, perished in the bombing. This area was a historical center of Christianity in Japan, with a significant number of "hidden Christians" who had maintained their faith in secret for generations

Japan has many allies/partners, not just US.
I support US-Japan Alliance, but I think Japan should strengthen it’s Self Defence Forces so they aren’t so reliant on America.

Yet Harry Truman, who was a Christian, massacred the Christians of Japan. So much for “love thy neighbour.”

It's not like he would've fucking known that. You know Jesus asked God to spare the Romans who knew not what they were doing, right?

Whether he knew or not is irrelevant. Christian teachings forbids the killing of innocents. By dropping the atomic bombs, President Truman was committing the worse sin of his religion

Reminder Truman is the most powerful person who ever lived (the only human being in history to have access to nuclear weapons at a time when no other power had them) and frequently chose the less aggressive attitude. If he'd listened to MacArthur the world would have been destroyed

He unnecessary massacred the innocent people in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He should be remembered as Hitler and Stalin are.
> If he'd listened to MacArthur the world would have been destroyed
MacArthur wanted to use atomic bombs against communists, who aren’t human

He absolutely would have known that. You think they dropped the bomb at random? The targets chosen were chosen with deliberate intent to create the most morale damage as possible. They would have gotten a complete report about the nature of the whole city and its inhabitants

Japan would not have won in a war with the US
But Japan was unwilling to surrender, they were tunnel visioned in on their samurai ideals.
A land invasion would have resulted, with tens of millions of civilians killed, and most of the country completely destroyed.
The nuke WAS the more peaceful option. Even Japan would agree that it was better to be nuked, because it shook their stubborn government out of a suicidal war.

>The nuke WAS the more peaceful option
This is Allied propaganda. Japan was ready to make peace with the US mediated by Sweden and the USSR prior to the atomic bombings. It was the US that was stubborn with their unnecessary demand for unconditional surrender

This is dishonestly reductive. Japan was internally willing negotiate peace, but only if their stringent terms were met. More importantly, however, they couldn't even agree of their own peace terms. The war cabinet was evenly split on the "four condition" vs "one condition" policy, with the former stating, in addition to retaining the emperor's status, that Japan would only surrender if 1. Japan would disarm its own forces; 2. Japan would conduct any war crimes trials of its own nationals; and 3. there would be no occupation of Japan.
This would have been analogous to a spree killer being allowed to pack up his guns, get in his vehicle, and drive home without the police pursuing or any subsequent legal prosecution. Nippon was greedy and they paid for it.
