White supremacist serial killer Joseph Paul Franklin is best known for his attempts on the lives of pornographic magazine publisher Larry Flynt and civil rights attorney Vernon Jordan.

He was born as James Clayton Vaughn Jr. in Mobile, Alabama on April 13, 1950. His father, James Clayton Sr., was a butcher. His mother, Helen Rau, was a German woman Clayton had met while serving in World War II, and he had three siblings. James Sr. abandoned the family when his son was 8 years old; when he would come back to visit, he would beat his four children, but James got it the worst. They were poor and James suffered from malnutrition. A family friend recalled that Helen was "a very strict, perfectionist German lady. I never saw her beat her kids but I heard stories." James claimed his mother didn't take his father's abuse of them seriously and seemed to dismiss it as a joke; he thought she never really cared about her children's well-being.

As a teenager, James became interested in evangelical Christianity and then Nazism. This would lead to him adopting the name "Joseph Paul Franklin" in honor of Benjamin Franklin and Joseph Goebbels. He read Mein Kampf and became inspired to start a race war. He was injured in an accident in high school that impaired his eyesight and dropped out of school. Due to this physical impairment, he was disqualified from military service at a time when many of his peers were being drafted into the Vietnam War.

He got married in 1968 at the age of 18 but frequently beat his wife. Other times she would find him in a corner crying uncontrollably. During this time, his neighborhood was racially integrated which angered him. He was arrested several times during the early '70s on concealed weapons charges. Franklin's mother died suddenly in 1972. He declared himself a full-out white supremacist and joined a neo-Nazi party in Atlanta, while also holding membership in a Mobile chapter of the KKK; he once accompanied a young David Duke on a bus ride to a Nazi meeting in Atlanta. Franklin began picking fights with interracial couples he'd encounter in public and over the Labor Day weekend in 1976 attacked one such couple by spraying mace at them.

For the next four years, Franklin wandered around the country using at least 18 pseudonyms and dyeing his hair as he murdered 13 in a one-man war against racial minorities. He changed cars and weapons frequently and funded his killing spree with a series of bank robberies. On July 29, 1977, he firebombed the Beth Shalom Synagogue in Chattanooga, Tennessee but nobody was inside at the time. On August 7, he shot and fatally wounded an interracial couple, Alphonce Manning and Toni Schwenn, both 23, in the parking lot of a mall in Madison, Wisconsin. On October 8, Franklin shot at a group of parishioners outside the Brith Sholom Kneseth Israel synagogue in St. Louis, Missouri. One man, Gerry Gordon, 42, was killed and two others, Steven Goldman and William Ash, were wounded.

On March 6, 1978, he shot Hustler Magazine publisher Larry Flynt in Lawrenceville, Georgia. Flynt was rendered a quadraplegic by the shooting. Franklin would claim this was revenge for Flynt depicting interracial sex in his magazine. On July 29, he shot a black man and his white girlfriend (William Tatum, 20, and Nancy Hilton) outside a Pizza Hut in Chattanooga, Tennessee with a 12 gauge shotgun. Hilton survived. On July 12, 1979, Franklin shot Harold McIver, a 29 year old black Taco Bell manager, in Doraville, Georgia, for talking to a white woman. On August 18, he shot and killed a black man named Raymond Taylor in Falls Church, Virginia. On October 21, he shot and killed an interracial couple, 42 year old Jesse Taylor and 31 year old Marion Bresette, in Oklahoma City.

On May 29, 1980, Franklin shot and seriously wounded civil rights attorney Vernon Jordan in Fort Wayne, Indiana after seeing him talking to a white woman. On June 8, he was sitting on an overpass in Cincinnati, Ohio with the aim of shooting an interracial couple but, unable to get at them, instead shot and killed two black teenagers, Darrell Lane, 14, and Dante Brown, 13. On June 15, Franklin shot and killed an interracial couple, Arthur Smothers, 22, and Kathleen Mikula, with a rifle as they walked across the Washington Street Bridge in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. On June 25, he shot and killed two hitchhikers, Nancy Santomero, 19, and Vicki Durian, 26, with a .44 pistol in Pocahontas County, West Virginia. Initially Franklin just offered the two women a ride but decided to kill them when one said she had a black boyfriend. A different suspect, Jacob Beard, was convicted of their murders and sentenced to life in prison until Franklin confessed in 1999 and he was freed and filed a $2 million wrongful imprisonment lawsuit.

On August 20, Franklin shot and killed two black males, Ted Fields, 20, and David Martin, 18, near Liberty Park in Salt Lake City, Utah. After this he headed back east across the Great Plains states and on September 25 was pulled over in Kentucky by a state trooper over questions about a firearm he was transporting in his vehicle. He escaped from police custody but his car had evidence in it linking him to the sniper killings. His conspicuous Nazi tattoos on his arms and his habit of visiting blood banks led to a nationwide alert being put out to blood banks. On October 28, Franklin was at a blood bank in Lakeland, Florida where a worker there thought he looked suspicious and notified authorities. He was quickly apprehended.

Franklin was acquitted on Federal civil rights charges for the shooting of Vernon Jordan, but found guilty of first degree murder by a Utah jury and sentenced to life in prison. Later he would confess to having shot Larry Flynt but was never charged in that incident. Other states filed charges against him for the bombings and sniper killings in them. All in all, he was believed responsible for killing 18, wounding 5, bombing two buildings, and robbing 16 banks.

Sixteen years into his prison sentence, he would be tried again in Ohio in 1999 for the shootings of the two black teenagers in Cincinnati in 1980 and found guilty. He had reportedly told prosecutor Melissa Powers "You know I killed those dudes. I was trying to cleanse the world of ugly people and blacks are the ugliest people in the world." Although Ohio prosecutors would have favored the death penalty, the state did not have it at the time when the crimes were committed.

Franklin had also been tried in Missouri in 1997 for the synagogue shooting 20 years earlier. He tried to escape from custody during the trial. In a series of interviews with investigators, he explained in detail how he'd planned out and prepared for the attack, and that "I saw Jews as an enemy of the white race." He was sentenced to death.

He served the remainder of his sentence at the Potosi Correctional Center in Mineral Point. Larry Flynt, a staunch opponent of capital punishment, expressed his opposition to his shooter's execution. "I feel the government shouldn't have a monopoly on murder," he said. "If they won't let us kill each other, they have no business doing it."

Franklin's execution by lethal injection was delayed due to lack of the necessary drugs. The drugs in question had been purchased from a company in Germany and when the German government learned of what they were being used for, it placed a ban on their export to the United States. A different lethal injection cocktail had to be devised and obtained from a US-based supplier. The company that supplied the drug was not named.

Franklin attempted to appeal his execution on grounds of mental incompetence but the Supreme Court rejected it. He expressed remorse for what he did, blaming it mostly on his deprived and abusive upbringing. "I saw some blacks here in the prison and I realized they were just people like anyone else."

He was executed in the Eastern Reception, Diagnostic and Correctional Center in Bonne Terre with an injection of pentobarbitol on November 20, 2013.
