He would have supported Seward who had his nomination for president stolen by lincoln

lincoln was such a radical it forced south carolina to secede because he stole the primary from the centrist faction in the party

Why would the Union think Succession means we keep all our forts in the South? Did the British after the Revolutionary War think they would be keeping all their Forts in the former 13 colonies?

Jefferson would have supported the South simply because the Battle Hymn of the Republic had too much God shit in it, whereas the Dixie song is just about being gay in the South

>Did the British after the Revolutionary War think they would be keeping all their Forts in the former 13 colonies?
False equivalence fallacy
The North continued to operate as though the South was never independent, but was rather temporarily taken over by violent insurrectionists. The reason this is a false equivalence is because the 13 Colonies were already recognized by France and Morocco as independent before the Revolutionary War even concluded, whereas the Southern States never gained such legitimacy.

Jefferson's life after the presidency is interesting. Reading his work and opinions and watching him navigate America's transition from a post revolutionary, former colony to an independent nation with its own unique political culture is fascinating. He was changing along with the country. And he would have supported the lawful the elected president.

They aren't state property, you would have to negotiate the sale or transfer of them. Britain kept all its forts in America until they were conqiered or surrendered by treaty, they didn't let the Americans sign the Declaration of Independence and just wait until the Americans seized fort Ticonderoga.

He was still a Virginian and from a slaveholding family (although he personally disliked it). He'd agonize over it for sure, but Robert E. Lee was in the same boat himself.

He was still a Virginian and from a slaveholding family (although he personally disliked it). He'd agonize over it for sure, but Robert E. Lee was in the same boat himself. If anything, Lee was arguably even more inclined to side with the Union because he privately denounced secession even harder than he did slavery, but when Virginia left the Union, he couldn't bear the thought of having to fight against his own neighbors and family.

They were occupying troops in foreign land that had been in part paid for by the citizens of this new country.
This is a silly debate.
You hate the South because they put blacks in their place and forced them to be productive contributing members of society instead of their favorite pastime of terrorizing elderly asiatics or stabbing children.
But this is no reason to poopoo The South.
The South was right.
The Union should have abandoned the forts as a sign of good will.
That would have de-escalated.
The Union wasnt forced to fight.
You can argue fighting was the right thing to do from a Might makes Right stance but its undeniable Lincoln actively avoided the offramps.

Sarah was pro-Union, despite living in a CSA state. Considering Polk was also strongly against secession during the Nullification Crisis and all of his major presidential Jacksonian allies and cabinet officials (other than Cave Johnson) were staunch Unionists, it's almost certain he would have been too.
