Mass murder is more common than its ever been
Since 1966 with Richard Speck and Charles Whitman killers went from sadistic creeps who abduct children to disgraced loners and incels who just want to kill in numbers. Could this new craze be a sign the fabric of reality has become unstable?

It's unironically almost entirely the product of mass media making the perpetrators into celebrities.

If the perpetrators were instead sentenced to damnatio memoriae and had their names and photographs excised from all public records, mass shootings would disappear as a phenomena within a few years.

Serial killing has significantly died down ever since the early 90's. This is probably due to most criminals being on paper. Also, everyone's more cautious.

Lone mass murderers maybe, since new technology makes that easier. To be a mass murderer before 1900 you'd have to either jump a bunch of children or use dynamite.

There were still serial killers, the deadliest ever probably being Christman in 16th century Germany.

Mass murder (by group, aka massacre) was more common in the past due to ethnic conflict, banditry, clan feud etc. so I'd say there are still less mass killings now than there were in the distant past. It's just shifted from many unreported mass killings to fewer, more lethal lone wolves.
