How come Italians, just like the Irish, weren’t considered white by Americans until the 1950's, even though Rome was the birth place of modern Western Civilization which USA copied its government from and Hitler believed Italians were honorary Aryan whites?

Was it because of their olive skin or their Catholicism?

You could admire their early civilizations while thinking the modern-day inhabitants were worthy of contempt, if you considered that the founders of these civilizations had “degenerated” in the centuries… Degenerate, literally meaning, being inferior to one’s predecessors, your genes worsening.
So there was no contradiction between admiring the Romans, while considering the modern-day Italians inferior, “degenerate”.

The majority of Italian mtDNA lineages are theorized to have a small African component. However, some regions, like Volterra and Latium, are surprisingly white.

I live in a italian neighborhood. They aren't pale. They usually have tannish skin. Bc they come from a sunny part of the world. Of coarse ether aren't pale. Ditto for greeks and southern spaniards and sicilians. But there were blonde and white italians. But whose to say they don't have a ancestor who was Irish or English or whatever.
