Liberalism was more adaptable at providing for the diverse wants and needs of increasingly complex civilizations. Social Darwinism is a misreading of evolution and an attempt to apply it to politics. The basic idea is that the "strong" are like lions, tigers, or bears and you help select the "weak" out, but actually it's the most adaptable who win in the end, and there's a lot of examples of apparently strong creatures going extinct.
