Austria proper was 100 percent ethnic German whilst the kingdom of Hungary contained many Romanians and slavs so it makes sense.

Most of that territory had been part of Hungary for a thousand years tho. Transylvania was pretty much the cradle of the country.
Hungary was one of the first states in Europe during the early middle ages.
Trianon was pretty brutal, it completely decimated Hungary based on ethnic principles, while simultaniously cheated Germany because suddenly the same principles no longer applied.
