Witch trials stem from our evolved tendency to detect threats and blame misfortunes on *outsiders*. Witches were scapegoats for disasters (famine, disease), and targeting them boosted group cohesion. Brains misfired, seeing patterns and enemies where there weren't any, just bad luck or natural causes.
