Interesting thread on /lit/
Saw this interesting thread on /lit/, thought I might crosspost it here (seeing how both authors deal in humanities, and half of this board is christian apoligetics anyway).

Is this an accurate depition of the situation? I think I've seen one or two people here criticise Ehrman, but I don't remember what for. I know this board does have a LOT of peterson fans, so I'm curious what you think about this comparison.

I thought it's interesting that Ehrman's personal life, other than him having no kids, is basically the exact lifestyle that Peterson supposedly promotes.

Peterson wishes he was Ehrman.

he wishes he needed to run like 5 or 6 businesses just to get by?
what would you rather do
>write books
or
>write books
>teach a college class
>charge money for your blog
>podcast
>interviews
>consulting work
>reaserch in academia
and all of that for less money than Peterson spends on clothes in 1 week

Peterson overworks himself for money. Ehrman lives a peaceful and happy life writing books.

Peterson is an attention whore and celebrity. Everything he does is under intense scrutiny and his public image becomes more valuable to him.

Ehrman is just some professor. He's famous for a professor but basically nobody compared to Peterson. Nobody expects Ehrman to bend over backwards to appease Christians. They only expect him to be mature and not offensive.

I think the premise that Ehrman isn't hiding anything is flawed though. The taboo Ehrman is avoiding is where he seriously entertains mythicism instead of dismissing it completely.

He hosted a free lecture with a Q&A last month (I think, might've been 2 months ago) SPECIFICALLY about why he thinks mysticism is absurd and utterly debunked, seemingly just because it being popular annoys him.

Every single time i've seen him mention mysticism he's openly critical of it, idk what you're on about honestly, if I had to pick one thing he is overly dismissive of it'd be mysticism.

(i'm assuming you mean mysticism as in people who think Jesus was a myth and there was no historical preacher named Jesus, if you mean like, magic, this makes even less sense though?)

If you look at pictures of Peterson, he has gray hair. This is due to his workaholic lifestyle. If you look at a picture of Basedman, you can see his hair is a beautiful shade of brown, despite being older.

that's because ehrman uses old pictures for publications (he probably can't be asked to pay for another photoshoot)

he's greying and bald

wouldn't ehrman being a nobody compared to Peterson make him MORE inclined to bend over backwards for mass appeal? if a random office worker was found to engage in racially motivated assaults, he'd lose his job and be forced to live off food stamps, assuming he even qualifies. Meanwhile Mark Wahlberg can do that shit just fine because he's rich and famous, the worst thing that can happen is him being religated to lesser productions like Mel Gibson, who is still a multimillionaire.

>has only published books for popular audiences
Maps of Meaning wasn't written for a popular audience.
>disliked by basically everyone in his field
His h-score prior to becoming internationally famous disproves this.
>and a sizable portion of the general population, "love him or hate him" basically
The retards who constantly seethe about him are vocal and project their obsession onto anyone who says even a mildly positive thing about him (it's a similar phenomena to TDS).

Peterson is someone who discovered the Bible to be interesting rather late in his life and wants to have a fresh take and get more eyes on the field. So he concocted a psychology connection so he could talk about what he was interested in.

He is the first academic of the new generation to break any ground for the scriptures in popular discourse, so it is fitting that he has struggles in learning to stand up like a baby. Someday he may learn to walk and hopefully run.
