A Norman Rockwell cover depicting the 1948 election. What are your thoughts on this election?

Dewey was Republican Hillary Clinton. Thought the election was entitled to him and he could do nothing and win.

Harry Truman was based and I'm glad that he won the presidency. I think that he was probably the best democrat of the 20th century. (Fuck FDR, Fuck Wilson) That said, I'm glad that Eisenhower won in 52.

He was an average machine politician from Missouri they picked to replace Wallace on the '44 ticket because he was a centrist and looked and talked folksy.

I'm curious, why would you like Truman but not FDR?
Anonymous No.17915974
Huge upset when Truman won. The Chicago Tribune even published "Dewey Defeats Truman" on its front page once.

I think FDR was a tyrant and a demagogue who should never have served beyond a 2nd term. At least Harry Truman seemed to treat the office as though it were a public job to be served and not his personal livelihood. Plus, saying he was the best democrat is like saying he was the best turd so take that as you will

Not necessarily, he was trying to play it safe and didn't want to wage a pointlessly aggressive campaign.

>because he was a centrist
You say that if it's a bad thing. In a decade where the world was ripped apart by extremists with powerful militaries, I don't mind a moderate being the first (and thus far only) person in history to have access to nuclear weapons during a time when no other state does.
Imagine if Stalin had nukes at a time when no one else did.

>The average man in their early 20's had a loyal wife who was a virgin when they met, a house on a mortgage that will be paid in a few years, a car they own outright that will last for decades, a child who will grow up to be heterosexual, and a job that they got with no qualifications, work no more than 40 hours a week mon-fri with all holidays off and which they will retire at 60

I don't know what fantasy world this was because it never existed in any actual period of time.

Truman didn't fare well in the industrial cities that had been FDR's mainstay, Democrat voters chiefly the powerful unions stayed home which allowed Dewey to dominate the Northeast while he instead focused on his backyard in the Midwest and got out the votes there to win.

the early postwar years were kind of like oatmeal with no flavor, the public mood didn't favor getting crazy and inoffensive centrism was in

>no one had premarital sex
Delusion
>cheap housing and amenities
Poverty rate was higher pre-1960 than after it.
>no gay kids
Sexual orientation is basically random and has been forever.
>no qualifications
Means no bargaining power unless you're in a massive union, which is likely under huge aggressive pressure by both corporations and the government at all time.
>no overtime
Nonsense and fantasy
>retire at 60
Never happened. Retirement age was deliberately set at the average age of death in the period and was considered a great boon at the time because otherwise people worked until they couldn't/they died if they weren't highly skilled and had pensions. Having long golden years is a modern development.

Late 50s cars were worse, absolute flimsy crap that were all style and no engineering or durability.
