without exaggerating, 95% of residential buildings in brisbane are single family detached homes on streets which are identical to the ones you'd find in any country town

Cultural cringe from the British abandoning Australia during WW2. Australia out of revenge basically went on a rampage tearing down victorian and early 20th century archetecture to replace it with "Modern American" architecture. The Queen herself had to step in around the 1970s to try reign it in my forcing heritage listing on old victorian era buildings. The infamous royal exhibition building was slated for demolition in 1979 but was saved by the Queen stepping in.

This is the case with most Australian cities. Tiny CBD's with like 10 big buildings, then just endless disconnected suburbia with worse services than a country town due to country towns generally being more walkable.
Like lets be real, Canberra is not really a functional city, it's 5 very seperated country towns connected by freeways.
