Ancient opinions on the Jews
Tacitus on the jews
Jewish excursion
Tacitus gives in the 5. Book of Historiae as an excursion to the presentation of the Jewish war an outline of ancient Judaism. In his opinion, the Jews do not follow a belief, but a repulsive "superstitio" (superstitio), that they are a "holy tribe" (taeterrima gens) and have only "hostile hatred" (hostile odium) left for all other people. His judgment was devastating: the entire Jewish way of life was "absurd and contemptuous" (absurdus sordidusque).
Tacitus characterized the Jewish practice of religion as contrary to that of non-Jewish believers:
βIn order to make sure of the people for the future, Moyses gave them new cult customs that are in contrast to those of all other people. Unholy there is everything that is sacred to us, on the other hand, what is considered a disgrace to us is permissible.β
