Concepts of Nations culture and ethnicity still existed so by appearance and ethnicity a Christian would view a pagan Saxon to be the same nation and ethnicity as him but universally would see an Ethiopian as being part of the same religion whereas the pagan saxon was in error even though he was the same ethnically. But they would have met an Ethiopian in real life in medieval times anyways.
