Similarly the Africans in the West had quilted 'cataphracts' for similar reasons (lots of bows, poison bows) and they didn't get it from anyone because their only interaction Northward was with the Almoravids (Wouldn't have used it) and then whichever Moroccan dynasty went and smacked them around but that was well after such cavalry existed.
Just google in google books, google on regular google for derivatives of
"North African medieval armor", "Medieval African armor", "What did Medieval African soldiers look like". Or find the dynasty you are interested in and look into that one.
Pic related from whatever European manuscript is likely depicting the "Turk" mercenaries that'd end up in the West sometimes (Can't see why Europeans would be having bows on horseback), while the guys up front are clearly Arab-Berber cavalry. And again it's the standard robe (one guy has it rolled up sleeves), turban, adarga shield.
You see this again with another Spanish manuscript, the same source I believe my prior pic was from here

with Christian knights followed by Muslim mercenaries having adargas, turbans, ect. Of note is the berbers/arabs have varied beards - red, blonde, brown, black.
