Soviet economy was pretty bad but not collapse-bad. The collapse came after the USSR dissolved as former officials looted whatever they could

the only reason the USSR lasted so long was because they captured and enslaved German scientists and economists etc. So by the time they died off, of course it started to collapse.

Soviet economics is a failure. If you meant 'What killed the Soviet economy' then it was Soviet economics - which is so bad that people were starving while they had more than enough of the most fertile land on Earth to feed everybody in the USSR, and they went broke while owning the largest single share of the worlds resources.

Communist theory and praxis are just that fucking retarded. If you were trying to intentionally ruin a country your plan would look almost identical to Communist orthodoxy.

>The disappearance of the lake was no surprise to the Soviets, they expected it to happen long before. As early as 1964, Aleksandr Asarin at the Hydroproject Institute pointed out that the lake was doomed, explaining, "It was part of the five-year plans, approved by the council of ministers and the Politburo. Nobody on a lower level would dare to say a word contradicting those plans, even if it was the fate of the Aral Sea."

Soviets rode the oil crisis too hard to survive the oil slump. In the end oil bought them ~ 10 years but also completely destroyed incentives for reform. In a no oil embargo counterfactual there is at least some chance for a successful reform, or else it all collapses before 1980.
