All over Eastern Europe and Scandinavia countless kings and lords invited German immigrants because they were more skilled and wealthy than the locals. Rather than doing anything bad, it actually was tremendously beneficial for these countries and made them a lot stronger! So much for "muh homogeneity."

True, many settlers from Germany and the Low Countries were simply invited by local slavic rulers in order to develop the territory. What I find interesting is that those "colonies" had their own city rights, like the Magdeburg or Lübeck Laws, but still were part of the holdings the respective slavic territorial lords. And many of those german city laws persisted well into the 18th or even 19th centuries.

It was a stupid thing, they just imported them and let them grow in number. In the PLC the nobles resisted modernization and just wanted a class of serfs. As a result there was no Polish merchant or middle class or any kind of academic professional one or even a national consciousness. That was filled entirely by Germans and Jews. And eventually those Germans and Jews had their own separate ethnic consciousness that undermined ethnic Poles. These Polish nobles did nothing as Silesia and Pomerania became German as long as they got to keep their serfs.

They should have been required to train Poles in their crafts and accept them in their guilds, and forcefully be assimilated instead of allowed to build separate settlements where they discriminated against the native Slavic population. Ostsiedlung is the classic example of immigrants let in by a corrupt elite who were undermining their host nation.
