Did American televangelists in the '70s and '80s actually think hard rock and metal music was the work of the Devil or was it just disliked because it was seen as competition for the attention of young people? Remember that the "rock music is the new pornography" line was being led by racist whoremonger and serial adulterer Jimmy Swaggart.

It was absolutely about control.

Swaggart and his ilk hated rock and metal because it threatened their grip on youth culture. The Devil angle was just a handy scare tactic. These hypocrites (many caught in scandals worse than any lyrics) needed boogeymen to keep donations flowing and pews full. Pure grift wrapped in moral panic.

There's something about the whole idea of televangelism that seems wrong. To me religion should be about local community and personal spirituality, and preaching on tv seems contrary to both. Also the first metal concert I went to a boomer tried to give me weed. (you seem to not think I was a metal head)

And the point of my post here >>17925658 is that the original metal people that televangelists were complaining about weren't evil themselves. All I said was

There were a bunch of straight edge people that witnessed people go out and party and drop LSD because people on TV did and their kids grew up listening to metal.

At the same time as this feminists have taken over America's psychological institutions and developed new "rape theories". They then use these theories to go across the country and try to convince straight edge parents in the 80's that their kids were getting mkultra'd. A lot of this happened out in California which was melting down socially from all the Mexicans

Satanic Panic, like all Moral Panics throughout history, was manufactured in order to corral people into Churches and amass power. It's Populism 101. Manufacture an enemy, use said enemy as a scapegoat for societies problems, and sit back and watch as the masses rally behind said manufactured enemy. No, actually. I was making purely political commentary about how trumps presidency mirrors Nixon's 1:1. Nixon's career was excoriated by the press and he refused to investigate voter fraud in the 1960 election out of fear of tearing the country apart. When he did become president Watergate happened which was connected to the DNC. The DNC/CIA was running a honey trap outside of their Watergate hq and in it John Dean had intimate relations with a CIA prostitute and then married her.

John Dean was the guy that flipped on Nixon and told people about the smoking gun tapes. Need I remind you the smoking gun tapes were about the Watergate break in, which DEAN planned.

Dean went on to become a wealthy investment banker in Beverly hills and got his memoirs turned into a tv miniseries.

Another guy made out like this called Bob Woodward, who was the main contact in the press for the government spooks leaking shit about Nixon.

A better question to ask would be, why is so much Christian/Evangelical media so fucking bad? If it was good and was capable of competing with more mainstream media then this wouldn't be an issue in the first place, because Christians would be producing media people would naturally rather see then the devils rock and cartoons or whatever
Most Contemporary Christian music is trash, and most contemporary Christian shows are also complete slop
I think the last time Christian media was truly mainstream was the late 90s with actually good shows like Veggie Tales and some brief alternative rock chart success with acts like Jars of Clay
There was also the movie The Prince of Egypt but I always associated that more with Judaism than Christianity.

I mean if you really get down to it, 99 percent of the NT are just the Apostles Glazing Jesus, the OT is where most of the Bibles interesting stories come from. One thing people have a hard time grasping about the 1970s is that a lot of stuff that is coded as more conservative now wasn't then. Like think about rodeos. In the 70s that was for good ol'boy fuckups who liked to drink beer and get on bulls because they are insane. It was totally apolitical and they were not church going fellows. Today? It's evangelical country all the way. These dudes pray and talk about how Christ is guiding them.

This was an intentional project that revolved around the cowboy churches you see in the rural west and the use of images that would connect the rural west to right-wing politics. It's similar in trucking. Like with rodeo, trucking was a big part of 70s popculture and movies and T.V. shows which were not right-wing at all. They might also be mad as hell and not going to take it anymore, but it was a small p-populism of men trying to buck a system that held them down as men and sort of as workers.

Because mainstream Christian culture is allergic to being cool, edgy and anti-establishment even though a lot of the old heavy metal dudes were Christians themselves. I think it's just a spiritual law of the universe that being a safe, straight edge supporter of the status quo just cannot be cool no matter what you ever do, so Evangelical propaganda can never hope to be anything more than pathetic or comical because that's all it is, "be a good boy and smile because jesus loves you :)"

There's nothing about Christianity specifically that makes this inevitable, since Christianity is kind of an apocalyptic death cult that was originally spread by suicidal fanatical wizards. Just keep the Bible citations out of your song and there's plenty of material, you've got werewolves, martyrs, crusades, demons, etc, you just have to lean into the gothic and goth is cool. Jimmy Swaggart and Jerry Lee Lewis were cousins and learned to play on the same piano as kids. A lot of the fervor in rock has roots in the charismatic frenzy of worship among poor white and blacks in the south and it can create a real schizo mindset trying to separate the two paths. Look at Lewis and Little Richard, crazed wild men who went through phases of totally renouncing rock for gospel, then coming back to the devil’s music. Those televangelists seething about metal might not have been conscious of this but they were denouncing the dark twin that came from the same source as their music and faith.

Like every other big musical act they were druggies who fucked any slut, underage or not, who hovered into their field of view.

I remember seeing a clip of one of these televangelists from the 70's and feeling moved in a weird way, because I had always seen them as almost caricature charlatans. But his Christianity was the most sincere and lived that I had ever heard. Its such a shame, tragic even how all of this unfolded over the decades, especially with the ties to Zionism.

Forgot his name btw.

>leftist Silicon Valley companies

the concept of any massive corporation being "leftist" is pretty goofy to begin with, but to actually believe that silicon valley companies are communist or some shit requires serious disconnection from reality. All the tech companies have right wing leadership and suck up to trump, they are all evil

the problem is they're in california which is basically just an industrialist playground of imported labor. Imagine being a californian and not GTFO. The meth heads from california seem to have the most sense since that's all we get.

>All the tech companies have right wing leadership
This is far more divorced from reality than his take. American leftists are kind of an oxymoron but it doesn't stop them from trying to out-do each other in racial masochism and doubling down on terrible ideas as a solution. The transformation of the tech leadership to where some are vaguely supportive of the GOP is a very recent anomaly. 10 years ago probably 80% of silicon valley was self-described leftist if they had political beliefs. I worked there then.

Turns out getting fucking destroyed by bad policies in urban centers and mass migration can change things quickly.

You just fell for their propaganda, hard. corporations curate their images to whatever makes them the most money - their underlying politics and bottom lines don't change. right wing politics give corporations more power over the government and country, so of course they always support right wing politics

To be fair many rock & metal guys prior to Cobain probably had private views that were even more chauvinistic than they had. The Mentors in particular. I grew up listening to a lot of heavy music (still do) but I've become a lot less hostile to organized religion as I've gotten older. Picrel is my bookshelf. As you can see I've become a bit of a convert in middle age.

I was talking about the actual people btw. Like actual tech workers and founders. Many people just wanted to solve problems and be kind by default, Dems were seen as the party of those things. There has been a hard right shift in the expressed politics of the people. People I worked and loved with my whole adult life.

I'm not arguing anything from inside your gay and failed dialectic.

Tech workers are often pretty mild liberals, this does not make the massive corporations they work for "leftist". Expressed politics are not the same as the politics that these companies actually practice

I don't think leftists actually exist in America. A proletariat cannot fundamentally exist here. Maoists stated this outright and it's one of the things they were absolutely correct about. Corporations don't have political convictions. They use lobbying and legislation to get what they want and have crushed flyover conservatives and poor urbanites alike. Its the opposite of a bourgeoisie or an aristocracy and they largely exist on deals with the state. The majority of our economy is not even private.

Marxism cannot describe or model what is occuring now. It cannot even model much of the 20th century, which is why rigid Marxist states failed while Vietnam and China thrive. Most of the dialectic is simply a failed thing. Its why Chomsky and that Greek fag have to develop modifiers like state-capitalism or techno feudalism, which are both wrong because myopic. It doesn't make me le bad or against farm equipment having rights to state facts about a thing that on its own is a failure.

It's both actually. A lot of stations in the country didn't want to play his music because it was obvious that he was doing covers of old "race records", which is what media for blacks was referred to at the time. It was basically racemixing to them.
