The cross is an ancient demonic pagan symbol. Christ likely wasn't even nailed to a cross, but a simple upright pole as many Roman crucifixions had been done.

I think the simplicity of the cross (literally can be drawn with just two straight lines) is part of what made it such a widely used symbol. A noose might work similarly.
