How come Italians, just like the Irish, weren’t considered white by Americans until the 1950's, even though Rome was the birth place of modern Western Civilization which USA copied its government from and Hitler believed Italians were honorary Aryan whites?

Was it because of their olive skin or their Catholicism?

Neither. Olive skin means "seeing" color through a person's name, and catholicism only matters when you're not from an entrenched family.
It was purely a matter of large numbers migration necessarily being bothersome to the locals, just like it was for literally every ethnic group to ever get to america aside from the first wave of injuns.

My mother is English/german and my father southern italian. i identify with my mother's family because i'm an asocial sperg but they think i'm too dark to be one of them so i'm stuck in the middle and don't belong anywhere. Benjamin Franklin's views were idiosyncratic. He considered Germans and Swedes to be "swarthy". He shouldn't be taken to be representative of anything. Legally, all European groups were considered "White" in the US. If they weren't, relationships between Italians, Irish, Jews, etc. and Anglos would be considered illegal, which they clearly weren't. Back then, people were less fixated on "whiteness" on national identity, ethnicity, and religion/culture. The idea of "whiteness", while perhaps existing for a bit longer informally, only really achieves salience due to greater contact with much more different foreign groups (e.g., Blacks, Indians). In this sense, Leftists are right to see as largely being a post-colonial construction, but not in the sense that they mean.
