Why was America so lax with reconstruction post Civil War? Why not do what they would do to Germany and brainwash them instead? Ban all southern symbols, force all southern people to see the horrors of war and create generational guilt and control.

The north just wanted things to go back to normal (minus slavery) as quickly as possible. The southerners were their brothers, they didn't want to rule over them as tyrants despite what southern propaganda said. Thus they were far too kind.
