Because they're projecting. When presented with a new idea their first thought is not "is that true", rather "what will people think", and they assume everyone else is like that.
They are often intelligent, getting into a good college, becoming lawyers or civil servants or working in the media and achieving business success, but they have been indoctrinated to curb their critical thinking skills. When their marxist sociology professor says "crime is due to poverty" to them it is like "2+2=4" or "the capital of Paraguay is Asuncion". when someone says "wait a minute, surely there are other factors", in their mind this person is uneducated, because that's not what they were taught, and that's enough for them because all the cool kids and all the smart people agree with them. They're not going to give the criticism an ounce of thought.
In their mind you are not supposed to gather information and analyze it yourself or you'll end up like creationists and flat earthers. Scrutiny must first be approved by the group before it can be considered valid or even relevant, which of course it won't be, and you will be scolded and "cancelled" if you keep bringing it up. In this way they become secure in the belief they are reasonable good people while simultaneously shooting someone down for stating even the basic facts of a subject that seem to contradict them. They are not thinking about the argument, they are thinking "why are you bringing this up, why would you say that".
