Shamash and Shams and Shamsu/Shapshu have both the same semitic root word
if you write the Attar and Ishtar in the same semetic language such as hebrew or arabic, than they not only will look very close, but also if you speak semitic language will than see it also almost the same
so, all these deities seems to have had one source.
wather Sin/Syn, Saggar ,etc
or El, Eloh, Elah, etc.
Nabu, Nabi, Anbay, etc.
actualy these names have meaning
Nabi means "prophet", so these deities have the same root words of some still in use words
Elah today means "god"
Shams means "Sun"
but I found it interessting that they would point at planet-venus and say "this is Attar" or "this is Ishtar"
same goes for the moon and the sun
If you read more, you understand, that people back then wanted to make untouchable stuff, to touchable, so they can start asking it for stuff
e.g. they want to touchable the sun and give it tribut, so they build a statue and than call it sun,
or they want to "touchable" victory, so they associate victory with Ishtar or Attar - who in return were associated with planet venus - and than start giving it tribut so victory be on their side.
(this is just general explanation, read more about the paganisim-mysticism-gnosticism and you will see it)
example this stone found shows the great king of old babylon Hamorabi standing like a servent infront of the god Shamash.
Hamorabi was the one who bracticly founded babylon.
he created the code of law of Hamorabi and centreliced the babylonian empire. so you can see why he would be praying for Shamash (Order, Rule and Wealth), bacause in the acient mind, he was asking Order, Rule, Wealth, etc. itself to bless him.
so, the mindset of people backthen was different
