Why do so many people have this absurd idea that manual farm labor is some sort of comfortable life? The work is very hard on the body and the Southern heat would have made it worse. That isn't even considering the bare minimum conditions slaves often lived with. Food was rationed and generally cheap, not all you can eat.

What i've generally gathered is that being a slave on a large plantation was actually vastly preferable to being owned by a small farmer or non-planter. Typically plantation slaves only had to deal with a handful of overseers who didn't care all that much as long as the slaves did their assigned work. The land lord was generally absentee most of the year, and there were plenty of chances to exercise some autonomy in your life.

Small farms were worse because you were always constantly being watched by your actual owner and they typically had more of a need for hard labor, so you would get worked much more intensely and more often.

Sugar plantations were supposed to be a whole other level of hell though. Cotton planters would often use the threat of sale "down the river" to a sugar plantation to keep slaves in line.

The mines were the most brutal and where slaves were worked to death, and American slavery was heaven on earth compared to Caribbean and Latin American slavery. The latter two literally burned up 90% of slaves within a few years and needed constant refreshments from Africa.

There's also white indentured servants who typically had it harder than black slaves. Black slaves were considered a long term investment while indentured servants were on 7 year contracts, the shittiest and most brutal work was given to the white slaves.
